Summer and Shiatsu

Finally the summer has arrived

As the weather warms and our lives begin to move outside, let’s take some time to think about keeping our mind and bodies healthy. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on five elements.  Summer is ruled by the Fire element and is expressed in nature as well as in the body. Growth, joy and spiritual awareness between the heart and mind are the focus during this season. The element is associated with the heart, pericardium, small intestines and is related to the tongue.

The heart Chakra is in the center of the Chakra system and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity.

Physically, when the fire element is balanced, the heart properly governs and circulates the blood and also insures proper assimilation of the breakdown of food in the small intestines. Emotionally, when the fire element is balanced, sensitivity and expression, true fulfillment and the equilibrium between heart and mind are the greatest rewards.

Tip of the Summer Season

Symptoms of summer heat are excess body heat, sweating, parched mouth and throat, constipation, and heart palpitations. Strengthening the immune system should be a part of any seasonal ritual. The focus is to strengthen the essence, nourish the Qi and regulate the heart.

The best form of medicine is preventative. Learn how to heal with the seasons and how Shiatsu Therapy which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine can bring your body back into balance!

Some amazing herbs for the summer:

Basil, chamomile, dandelion, elder flower, fennel, lavender, rose and thyme.

Let’s now try an amazing stretch to bring harmony in our body.

With the soles of your feet together, bring your feet towards your body as close as possible. Hold your feet with your hands and try touching your head to your toes, resting your elbows on the floor. Relax as much as possible and take two to three deep breaths. If your knees don’t lie flat on the floor, this indicates disharmony of the heart and small intestine meridians. This exercise will help balance both the meridians.
